Setting Up a Family Account — Parent & Kid Devices

HausFlow Family is one app with two shells. Everyone — parents and kids — downloads the same app from the App Store or Google Play. The app automatically shows the right experience based on the account role.

How It Works

Parent shell (/(parent)) Kid shell (/(kid))

The parent shell and kid shell are entirely separate surfaces. A kid who logs in on their own device will never see the parent dashboard, task approval queue, or family management screens.

Step 1: Parent Sets Up the Family

  1. Download HausFlow Family.
  2. On first launch, choose I'm a parent / home leader.
  3. Enter your first name.
  4. Choose your parent role — Mom, Dad, Step Mom, Step Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, or Guardian. This is the title kids see in notifications when you assign them a chore. You can skip this and set it later from Settings → Household → Parent role.
  5. Name your family household.
  6. Optionally pick starter chores from a list of eight common chores to seed your task board.
  7. You are now in the parent shell.

The whole setup takes under two minutes.

Step 2: Invite a Kid

  1. In the parent shell, go to the Family tab.
  2. Tap + Invite.
  3. The app shows two invite cards: Invite a child and Add a parent or sitter.
  4. Tap the right card for your situation. You will see a unique HF-XXXX invite code and a scannable QR code.
  5. Share the code or show the QR to your kid — via text, AirDrop, screenshot, or in person.

The invite code is tied to your family and stays valid until you regenerate it. You can refresh it from the same screen any time.

Step 3: Kid Joins on Their Device

  1. Kid downloads the same HausFlow Family app.
  2. On first launch, choose I'm joining a family.
  3. Enter the invite code or scan the QR code.
  4. The kid enters their first name.
  5. The app links their account to the family with the kid role.
  6. They land directly in the kid shell — task list, routines, rewards.

From this point forward, every time the kid opens the app they go straight to the kid experience. The parent shell is not accessible to them.

Shared Devices (e.g., a family iPad)

If a parent and kid share a single device:

  • The parent logs in first and sets up the family.
  • The parent can switch to kid view from the swap icon in the top corner — this lets parents preview what kids see and test the experience.
  • Switching back requires the parent mode PIN if one has been set.
  • On next cold launch, the app returns to the logged-in account's real role.

This is not a substitute for separate accounts on separate devices. For a genuine kid experience — where the kid sees only their tasks and cannot view family management — the kid should have their own device and their own account.
